Lille, France elevated to Metropolitan Archdiocese

The Diocese of Lille, France was elevated to a Metropolitan Archdiocese.

The Archdiocese of Cambrai (which had been the Metropolitan of the Diocese of Lille) now becomes a suffragan while remaining an Archdiocese. The Diocese of Arras (, Boulogne, e Saint-Omer) (which had been a suffragan of Cambrai) also becomes a suffragan of Lille.

Archbishop Laurent Bernard Marie Ulrich, who is scheduled to be installed tomorrow, remains the new ordinary.

Malchuk named Odessa-Simferopol Auxiliary

Bishop-elect Petro Herkulan Malchuk, O.F.M. was named Auxiliary Bishop of Odessa-Simferopol, Ukraine and titular bishop of Media.

Cardinal Suárez Rivera Died

Adolfo Antonio Cardinal Suárez Rivera, Archbishop Emeritus of Monterrey, Nuevo León, México, has died. He was 81 years old and had served as a priest for 56 years (the anniversary was a fortnight ago). He also served as a bishop for 36 years and as a cardinal for 13 years. May he rest in peace.

Bishop N`Gnamé Died

Bishop Paulin Kouabénan N`Gnamé, Bishop of San Pedro-en-Côte d’Ivoire, has died. He was 45 years old and had served as a priest for 18 years and as a bishop for under a year. May he rest in peace.

Bishop Dobbelaar Died

Bishop Leonardus Dobbelaar, C.M., Vicar Apostolic of Nekemte, Ethiopia, has died. He was 65 years old and had served as a priest for 38 years and as a bishop for 13 years. May he rest in peace.

Archbishop Paulos Faraj Rahho, Archbishop of Mossul (Chaldean), Iraq, has died. He was 65 years old and had served as a priest for 42 years and as a bishop for 7 years. May he rest in peace.

Giordana named Slovakio Nuncio

Archbishop Mario Giordana was named Apostolic Nuncio to Slovakia. The post had been vacant since Archbishop Henryk Józef Nowacki was named Apostolic Nuncio to Nicaragua. Archbishop Giordana had been serving as Apostolic Nuncio to Haiti.

Tamba named Freetown and Bo Archbishop

Archbishop-elect Charles Edward Tamba was named Archbishop of Freetown and Bo, Sierra Leone. The archdiocese had been vacant since the retirement of Archbishop Joseph Henry Ganda in March 2007.

Scarrone Carrero retired, Pérez Scremini named Florida Bishop

Bishop Raúl Horacio Scarrone Carrero retired and Bishop Martín Pablo Pérez Scremini was named Bishop of Florida, Uruguay. Bishop Pérez Scremini had been serving as an Auxiliary Bishop of Montevideo, Uruguay.

D'Souza named Bellary Bishop

Bishop-elect Henry D'Souza was named Bishop of Bellary, India. The diocese had been vacant since the death of Bishop Joseph D'Silva in November 2006.

Bishop Helmut Krätzl retired and Bishop-elect Stephan Turnovszky was named Auxiliary Bishop of Wien {Vienna}, Austria and titular bishop of Ancusa.

Bishop Kevin John Dunn, Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle, England, Great Britain, has died. He was 57 years old and had served as a priest for 32 years and as a bishop for 3 years. May he rest in peace.

Cardinal Promotions

Several Cardinals were elevated from Cardinal-Deacon to Cardinal-Priest while retaining the same Cardinal Title, namely:
  1. Lorenzo Cardinal Antonetti
  2. Darío Cardinal Castrillón Hoyos
  3. Giovanni Cardinal Cheli
  4. Jorge Arturo Augustin Cardinal Medina Estévez
In addition James Francis Cardinal Stafford was elevated to Cardinal-Priest and given the title of S. Pietro in Montorio.

Cardinal Castrillón Hoyos had been the most senior Cardinal-Deacon. Agostino Cardinal Cacciavillan now holds that distinction.

Kalenga Badikebele named Ghana Nuncio

Archbishop-elect Léon Kalenga Badikebele was named Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana and titular archbishop of Magnetum.

The post had been vacant since Archbishop George Kocherry was named Apostolic Nuncio to Zimbabwe in December 2007.

Colímon resigned, Paulo succeeded as Port-de-Paix Bishop

Bishop François Colímon, S.M.M. resigned and Bishop Pierre-Antoine Paulo, O.M.I. succeeded as Bishop of Port-de-Paix, Haïti. Bishop Paulo had been serving as Coadjutor of the same Diocese.

Ligondé retired, Miot succeeded as Port-au-Prince Archbishop

Archbishop François-Wolff Ligondé retired and Archbishop Joseph Serge Miot succeeded as Archbishop of Port-au-Prince, Haïti. Archbishop Miot had been serving as Coadjutor Archbishop of the same Archdiocese.

Constant retired, Kébreau named Cap-Haïtien Archbishop

Archbishop Hubert Constant, O.M.I. retired and Archbishop-designate Louis Kébreau, S.D.B. was named Archbishop of Cap-Haïtien, Haïti. Archbishop-designate Kébreau had been serving as Bishop of Hinche.
