Cardinal Bevilacqua Died (emeritus of Philadelphia)

Anthony Joseph Cardinal Bevilacqua, Archbishop Emeritus of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, has died.

He was 88 years old and had served as a priest for 62 years. He had also served as a bishop for 31 years and as a cardinal for 20 years.

May he rest in peace.

Patriarch-designate Francesco Moraglia was named Patriarch of Venezia {Venice}, Italy.

The post had been vacant since Angelo Cardinal Scola was named Archbishop of Milano {Milan}) in June 2011.

Patriarch-designate Moraglia had been serving as Bishop of La Spezia-Sarzana-Brugnato.

Iannone named Roma Vicegerente

Archbishop-designate Filippo Iannone, O. Carm. was named Vicegerente of Roma {Rome}, Italy and given the personal title of Archbishop.

He had been serving as Bishop of Sora-Aquino-Pontecorvo.

Leuzzi and Zuppi named Rome Auxiliaries

Bishop-elect Lorenzo Leuzzi and Bishop-elect Matteo Maria Zuppi were named Auxiliary Bishops of Roma {Rome}, Italy and titular bishops of Aemona and Villa Nova, respectively.

Harolimana named Ruhengeri Bishop

Bishop-elect Vincent Harolimana was named Bishop of Ruhengeri, Rwanda.

The diocese had been vacant since Bishop Kizito Bahujimihigo was named Bishop of Kibungo in August 2007.

Archbishop Sanchez (emeritus of Santa Fe, NM) Died

Archbishop Robert Fortune Sanchez, Archbishop Emeritus of Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, has died.

He was 77 years old and had served as a priest for 52 years and as a bishop for 37 years.

Bishop Mistrorigo (emeritus of Treviso) Died

Bishop Antonio Mistrorigo, Bishop Emeritus of Treviso, Italy, has died.

He would have turned 100 years old in March. He served as a priest for 76 years and as a bishop for 56 years.

He attended all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council.

May he rest in peace.

The Diocese of Ifakara, Tanzania was erected with territory taken from Mahenge.

Bishop Salutaris Melchior Libena was named its first bishop.

He had been serving as Auxiliary Bishop of Dar-es-Salaam.

Archbishop Jaime Pedro Gonçalves retired as Archbishop of Beira, Mozambique.

Bishop João Carlos Hatoa Nunes was named Apostolic Administrator of the archdiocese.

Bishop Joseph Anthony Irudayaraj, S.D.B. retired and Bishop Lawrence Pius Dorairaj was named Bishop of Dharmapuri, India.

Bishop Dorairaj had been serving as Auxiliary Bishop of Madras and Mylapore (Meliapor).

Wintzer named Poitiers Archbishop

Archbishop-designate Pascal Jean Marcel Wintzer was named Archbishop of Poitiers, France.

The archdiocese had been vacant since the retirement of Archbishop Albert Jean-Marie Rouet in February 2011.


Archbishop-designate Wintzer had been serving as Apostolic Administrator of the same archdiocese.

Archbishop-designate Ignatius Chama was named Archbishop of Kasama, Zambia.

The archdiocese had been vacant since Archbishop James Mwewa Spaita retired in April 2009.

Archbishop-designate Chama had been serving as Bishop of Mpika. He was also named Apostolic Administrator of that diocese.

Archbishop Lorenzo Baldisseri was named Secretary of the Congregation for Bishops.

The post had been vacant since Archbishop Manuel Monteiro de Castro (now Cardinal-Designee) was named Major Penitentiary of the Apostolic Penitentiary last week.

Archbishop Baldisseri had been serving as Apostolic Nuncio to Brazil.
